More Fantastic Genius Hour Presentations!

Today we had two more genius hour presentations – Maggie and Dylan both had fantastic projects and we thought you might like to take a look at their presentations! And the screaming in the background is Mrs. Derksen this time…your kids have very excitable teachers! We are so proud of the great work our class is doing and how they are embracing genius hour! Well done, grade six!

Spelling for this week

Sorry about the delay with the spelling words this week.  Here they are:

conserve, survive, circumference, circumstance, earliest, rehearse, adjourn, dropped, forgetting, beginning, science, ceremony, bouquet, colony, colonies, colonial, colonel, kernels, descend, descent.

Genius Hour Bottle Rocket

We had two great genius hour presentations this week.  Sarah baked and decorated some delicious cupcakes and Jeremy made and launched a bottle rocket.  Both projects were fantastic and it was evident that a lot of thought and work went into these projects.  Mrs. Derksen and I are excited to see the students working on things they are passionate about, learning new skills and gaining knowledge in areas of interest.  I video recorded Jeremy’s rocket launch and thought you  might like to see it!  My apologies in advance for my scream at the end…I was pretty excited to see his project succeed!
Enjoy the rest of your weekend!

A few announcements…

Jump Rope for Heart

We would like to thank all the students who collected money for our Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser.  The k-6 raised $4, 105.70 for the heart and stroke foundation – what a great contribution to this worthy cause.  Thanks also to the parents who volunteered their time for this day…it was very appreciated.

Olympic Day

On Monday, February 24th the grades 4-6 will participate in Olympic Day.   Tomorrow I will give the class the country they will be representing so they will know which colour they need to wear on Monday.

Open House

Tuesday February 25th is Highroad Academy’s open house.  Students are asked to wear full dress uniform next Tuesday.

Genius Hour & Animal Research

Tomorrow we have genius hour and I would like to remind students to bring any materials to school that they may need.  We will try to have a few more iPads available for them to work with!  If the students haven’t quite come up with a plan yet I would encourage them to look on the DIY site tonight so they can begin planning out their first project tomorrow. We look forward to seeing these first projects come together!

On Thursday and Friday we will be working on mini animal research projects – Thursday collecting our research notes and Friday putting them into a Haiku Deck during our computer class.  Please bring your research books or pages to school this THURSDAY.

See you tomorrow!

Valentine’s Day with our Buddies!

We have enjoyed our Friday afternoon buddy reading times and thought it might be fun to do some Valentine’s Day activities with them this week.  This Thursday afternoon we will be making a Valentine’s animal craft and decorating (and eating, of course) heart shaped sugar cookies.  I have made the cookies and  icing and would love for the students to bring some candy to decorate the cookies.  It does not need to be a huge amount of candy – I figured if each student brought a little ziplock full then we’d have lots to go around the two classes.

Thanks!

A Few Announcements…

Hi Everyone,

Uniforms:  Since we have had pretty chilly temperatures lately, full dress uniform has been cancelled tomorrow.  Everyone should be dressing very warmly these days.  Please send toques, gloves, and warm coats along with your kids.  Thanks so much!

Genius Hour: Yesterday, the grade 4 and 6 classes had a kick-off assembly to launch our new class called ‘Genius Hour’.  We, along with Mr. Hancock’s class, are going to be devoting one hour every Wednesday afternoon to let the students explore topics that they are passionate and curious about.  We are very excited to see what kinds of things they want to learn about and share with the class.  A newsletter went home  yesterday to explain it in more detail.  If that newsletter didn’t find its way home, I’ll attach it on here below for you to see.  We are looking for parent volunteers that would be able to help us with guiding the students in their projects.  If you are available on Wednesday afternoons from 2-3pm, we would love your help.  Your help once a month or every other week would be greatly appreciated.

Yesterday the students got to show off their amazing cell projects!  I am always amazed at the student’s creativity!  It was very apparent that a lot of hard work went into these plant and animal cells!  I thought I would let you see their projects!  Enjoy the pictures and have a fantastic weekend!

Sensational Cell Projects & Jump Rope for Heart

I am so excited to see the student’s cell projects tomorrow!  We will be set up in the dragon’s den (if you are looking at the portables it’s the one on the far right) and we would love for you to stop by and admire their creations.  We will be set up from 1:30 to 2:00.  Just a reminder that everything on the handout needs to be filled in as it will be part of the student’s marks.

Tomorrow we also have jump rope for heart.  Please return all the envelopes tomorrow – whether they contain donations or not.

Thanks!
