Friday Update

We had another great week here in the grade 5/6 classroom.  With spring break and report cards quickly approaching, we find that there is a hustle to get things finished up!  We also have a number of things happening over the next two weeks, as listed in the upcoming dates.

Upcoming Dates:

Monday, February 27th – Intermediate Skating from 1:00 – 2:00 at Prospera Center.  Bus leaves HRA at 12:30.

Wednesday, March 1st – Jump Rope for Heart Day.  Please return all forms by this date.

Friday, March 3rd – 1/2 day for students with 12:15 dismissal

Tuesday, March 7th – Brittania Mine Museum

Friday, March 10th – Last day before spring break and report cards go home.

Thailand Suitcase:  This is our ‘final push’ to get our suitcase filled.  Next week is the last week that we can bring items for the team to take to Thailand.  Please help us fill the suitcase!  School supplies and travel sized toiletries would be greatly appreciated!

Brittania Field Trip Forms:  Just a reminder that field trip forms need to be in by Tuesday, February 28th.

Skating:  Students can wear casual clothes on Monday.  They will also need to remember their skates and helmets!

Britannia and Biographies!

The Britannia permission slip went home today so please fill it in and return by next Tuesday.  Parents are invited to come along.  Tickets are $17 each (no cost for students) and parents will need to arrange carpooling together since there is no space on the bus.

Biography Projects:

Starting next week, the students will be creating Biography Lapbooks on a famous person of their choice.  Grade 5’s must choose a famous Canadian and Grade 6’s much choose a famous non-Canadian. 🙂  Below are some sample names, but they can choose someone who is not listed – just get it ok’d by Mrs. Derksen.

Parents, could you please help your child to choose a person to focus on by next Tuesday?  It is very important that your child actually have an interest in learning about the person. 🙂  The person may be alive or deceased.  It would be helpful if the famous person has done some kind of ‘humanitarian’ work in their life or raised awareness for an issue (example, mental illness) to use their popularity for good.  Thanks so much for your support!

Remember that your child does not have to pick someone on the list, these names are an extra help if they are stuck.

Here are a few pictures of Mrs. Derksen’s sample project.  She chose Princess Diana as her subject.
