Friday Update

Good afternoon!  I hope you all had a fantastic long weekend and enjoyed the beautiful weather!  By the looks of things, this weekend will be equally beautiful!  We had a great week and the students LOVED the beauty and beast performance on Thursday.  It was fun to see Mrs. Derksen’s daughter Nyla on stage as she and the cast did such an amazing job!  Below is some information on the Spring Sing and some other important dates.  The spelling list is also down below and the words will be posted on Spelling City.

Spring Sing

Here is the information from our music teachers:

Hello parents,

Our annual Spring Sing concert is this Monday, May 29th, at 7 PM. Students need to be in their classrooms at 6:40 in order to line up and be seated with their classes. The dress code is black and white or a combination of the two (not grey), with casual bottoms, such as blue jeans. Any shoe is fine, but please no shorts or short skirts. I would prefer that the students not have any large logos or characters on their shirts, and if you are unsure of what to have them wear, the uniform shirt is a good option.

I would like to encourage you to come out to this event. As a mom of two busy kids, I am all too aware that the pressure to keep up with events and activities can be overwhelming, which is why we try our best to keep nighttime events to a minimum. Your child has worked hard on their music and is looking forward to performing with their class, and we hope that all of our students will be able to attend this event.

Many thanks,

Hannah Mackie and Ruby Caswell

Poetry Books

The class has been writing amazing poetry over the last month.  They have chosen their four favourite poems and I am in the process of compiling them and getting them sent to a publisher.  Each student will get one book to have as a beautiful keepsake.  If you would like an additional book or two, I will add those to my order.  Additional books will be $5 each and I need to know by Wednesday, May 24th.  Please email me at pgoosen@highroadacademy.com if you would like to order any additional poetry books.

Thank you and enjoy the long weekend!

Friday Update

We had a great week this week and the students were kept busy!  They enjoyed their full day of learning about government on Tuesday and also started a new Science Unit on the Human Body.   We have another busy week next week so please mark the following dates on your calendar.

Monday, May 15th – Grade 6 Transition Meeting for students during the day.  Parent Meeting 3:30 in chapel.  If your child is going into grade 7 next year, please plan to attend.

Wednesday, May 17th – Star Wars/Superhero Dress Up Day.  Students can dress up as their favourite super hero or Star Wars character on Wednesday.  No weapons, please.  If students choose to not dress up then it is full dress uniform.

Thursday, May 18th – Art Gala

Art Gala:  We are looking forward to the Art Gala on May 18th! Please plan to attend this wonderful evening!  Below is a letter from Mrs. Causton, who is heading up the food portion of our evening.

Hello Parents!

As we eagerly anticipate another Art Gala Evening, we couldn’t do it without your help. The Art Gala and Talent Show is Thursday, May 18th, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Talent Show takes place from 7:15-7:45 p.m.

Each student in Mrs.Goosen’s/Mrs.Derksen’s class bring in two dozen cookies each.

I understand that many of us are very busy, store bought treats are more than welcome.  As you prepare/purchase your goodies, please keep in mind those students with nut allergies, thank you.

As well, please clearly label your containers/lids with your name & teacher’s name so that we can make sure they get returned!

Lastly, we are hoping to have the items delivered to the kitchen on the morning of May 18th at student drop off time to allow us to plate and prepare for the evening.

Thank you for all of your support & encouragement as the students prepare for an evening of the arts!

Kind Regards,

Rice Causton

Spelling List:  a lot, believe, certain, difference, does, finally, happiness, immediately, interesting, lesson, losing, minute, necessary, original, personally, possible, receive, separate, through, usually.

I think that’s about it!  Have a super weekend!

Our Class Election Results In!

We enjoyed an entire day learning about the different types of government and the BC political party platforms.  We finished off the day with a class election and it will be very interesting to see if our results reflect the Provincial results later tonight.  It was a fun day full of different activities, videos, and discussions about government.  The students did a great job of working through difficult vocabulary and complex topics.  Way to go, grade 5/6 students!!  It was a great day seeing you so excited and passionate about politics.

Here are our final results with the NDP squeaking out the win.  Annie was our government official, handing out and collecting the ballots.

Friday Update

We had a busy week with Lindeman Lake and the track meet at Bear Creek Park.  I was really proud of the class both events – they worked hard, had positive attitudes and their character was outstanding!  Well done!  We also planted some seeds for the Highroad Garden this week – always a fun time!       I will attach some pictures of our week below.

Next week is quiet…which will be so nice!  We have a few things coming up in May that I will post below.  I forgot to put the spelling words on Spelling City so the quiz will be on Monday.  Please note that the students will also get their new list of words on Monday, with a quiz next Friday.

We are still needing some donations to our school store for the end of May and June. If you are able to donate anything, that would be greatly appreciated.
