Weekly Update

We had a great week last week and have sadly come to the end of our Olympics mania!  We will be finishing up biographies and working on our last Olympics graphing activity…and then we say goodbye to the Winter Olympics for another four years.

Below I have a few items for you…keeping it short and sweet this week.

Spelling Words:  impossible, partial, total, particular, natural, temporary, pleasant, grateful, certain, serious

Uniforms:  If students bring boots to school, please ensure that they also bring shoes to change into.  We also need to remember that socks should be white, navy or black.  A change has been made to the Highroad Knight’s hoodies.  It has been decided that the Knight’s hoodies may only be worn outside or in the classroom during Knight’s Day.  If students are chilly in the classroom then they will need to wear their cardigans.

Collecting Items for Missions Trip – We are collecting items for our missions teams to take with them on their missions trip this March.  Below are a list of things that we would love help collecting.:  pencils, pens, crayons, pencil crayons, rulers, erasers, scissors, pencil sharpeners, small toys (no weapons please), small stuffed animals, kids hats and sunglasses, band-aids, hair brushes/combs, hair accessories, tooth brushes, small toothpaste, face cloths, children’s summer clothes, twin cotton sheets, baby toys, sleepers & blankets.

Jump Rope for Heart – It is taking place this Friday.  Please hand in envelopes this week, filled or empty.  We are still looking for a few volunteers on Friday.  If you are able to help for a half or full day please send me a quick email.

February 28th: Anti-Bullying & Pink Shirt Day

March 1st:  Jump Rope for Heart

March 9th:  Half Day, noon dismissal

Weekly Update

We had a great week in the grade 5 classroom!  Things were busy with skating, Valentine’s Day, Olympic learning, City of Ember and Biography projects being worked on.  We had some fun this week making Olympic Skiers using tinfoil and popsicle sticks!  We made two prototypes and then we saw how they would fare going down a ‘ski hill’.  I have some pictures of the skier-making progress and our skating time.

Skating – Our next skating date is Monday, February 19th.  We will be heading out at 12:30 and be skating from 1 -2pm.  Students can wear casual clothes on Monday.

City of Ember Project – We have finished our novel study, The City of Ember, and we loved it! There were twists and turns, cliffhangers, and mysteries. Our final project is to make a city of our own and we have been working hard at it for the past few weeks. Some of us are drawing maps of our city and some of us are building our maps.  Some students may need to bring some supplies from home – please check with your child and email adoerksen@highroadacademy.com if you have any questions. Our Cities are due on March 2.
