Pumpkin Math is Tomorrow! Please bring a large shirt for your child to wear over their uniforms as well as some gloves – especially if they don’t like the feeling of pumpkin goop on their hands!
Parent Teacher Interviews on Friday, November 1st
This is essentially a more formal version of our September parent night where you have the opportunity to connect with your child’s teachers in regard to your student’s progress so far this year.
This Parent/Teacher Interview day replaces our report cards which were traditionally sent out at the beginning of December. As happened last year, students will not receive a report card until the end of January. Therefore, the parent teacher interview will be an important day to discuss progress, celebrate growth and consider goals for your child. We would love to see all our parents on this day!
On November 1, the school will be open from 10-4 for interviews. Here is some information on how this day will work:
1- Please email me to request a specific appointment time or use the sign-up sheet available near the door of our classroom to sign up for a time slot.
2 – Head to the office if you need directions on where to go. There will also be free coffee, treats, and school store items available for purchase in the school foyer.
3- Proceed to the room of the teacher you’d like to chat with about your child – Mrs. Goosen is Portable 1. Interviews are 15 minutes.
We had a great week this week! We have a number of things coming up so please keep reading!
Pumpkin Math on Monday – We are excited to have our pumpkin Math morning on Monday. I am in need of at least one parent who can come and help on Monday from 9:00 – 11:30. Please come by if you are able! Kids will be getting dirty on Monday morning – plastic gloves will be helpful if your child does not like getting pumpkin goop on their hands. A large t-shirt to wear over their uniforms will also be great!
Parent Teacher Interviews on Friday – If you haven’t done so already, please email me at pgoosen@highroadacademy.com or stop by early next week to slot in a time to see me. I have times available between 11:30 – 3:30. It is important that I meet with each family. If Friday does not work for you then we will meet at a more convenient time. Just a reminder that there is no school for students on Friday.
On Friday, November 1st we will be having parent teacher interviews from 10:00 – 4:00. We are asking all parents to sign up for a 15 minute time slot. You can email me at pgoosen@highroadacademy.com or come by the classroom to sign up. If you are unable to come on November 1st then please let me know another date that works for us to meet.
Good afternoon and a happy Friday to you! We have come to the end of another busy week! Our classroom has been bustling with activity and the students have been working VERY hard. We have a few things going on so please keep reading…
You may have spoken with your child and heard that Mrs. Ellis will not be with us next week. She has been asked to teach in another classroom while a teacher steps away for health reasons. We are sad Mrs. Ellis is leaving but also happy that she is able to fill in where there is a need. Mrs. Riley will be joining us starting next week and will be working the alternating Wednesdays and Thursdays for the remainder of the year. I encourage you to pop by and say hi!
Pumpkin Math – On Monday, October 29th we are having a Pumpkin Math morning. I am in need of a couple of parents to help on the 29th. If you are able, please send an email or write a note in your child’s planner.

Last week we used some baking as object lessons. The first was a hamburger to illustrate the parts of a paragraph. We talked about our ‘ultimate’ burger and then compared it to writing a paragraph. We finished the lesson off with ‘hamburger cupcakes’. In Bible these last two weeks we have looked at the “L” portion of our LEADS program which is Look and Listen. We have been learning through picture books and the story of Samuel anointing David to be king that we can’t judge people on what’s on the outside, but rather what is in their heart. We used cookies to illustrate this point – the plain cookie tasted sweet and yummy while the ‘pretty’ cookie had some salt in the icing…looks can be deceiving! It was a good reminder to us all that EVERYONE needs to be treated with kindness and respect.
Headphones: I have several students who do not yet have headphones or earbuds at school. Please send them next week as we are starting to work more on the Chromebook.
Pumpkin Math: On Monday, October 28th we will be joining Mr. Hancock’s class to have a Pumpkin Math morning! We will be weighing, measuring, estimating, counting and creating polygons with our pumpkins! We would love to have some parents join us for this fun morning! We will start at 9 and should be finished by 11:30. Please send an email to pgoosen@highroadacademy.com if you are able to join us.
Upcoming Dates:
Monday, Oct. 14 – Thanksgiving
Oct. 22 – Individual and Class Photos
Oct. 25 – Pro D Day
Oct 28 – Pumpkin Math Morning
Oct. 29/30/31 – Scholastic Book Fair

Pictures – this week we started a new Science Unit on Solutions and Mixtures. I took some pictures of the students experimenting with mixing solids and liquids. There are also some pictures of our soup lunch and French puppet conversations! Enjoy!
Final Call for Comfort Kits – Please hand these in this week if you have not done so already.
Levels of Government Quiz onThursday – students will be bringing home an envelope to help them study the duties that fall under each level of government. Please remind your child to study and be prepared for this quiz on Thursday.
Homework – we had quite a number of students with incomplete homework this morning. Part of the expectation in this classroom is that students complete their work on time. When this does not happen, students will receive a fine (from our class economy) and stay in to finish their work. I have been reminding students to take incomplete work home and finish it up. Please check your child’s planner each night and ask them questions about what they have written in it. For example, students have vocabulary work due every Friday. If it is written in their planner, as them if it is completed. This will remind and help train them to complete their work on time. Thank you!
Class PAR-TAY! Students have earned a class party…woo hoo! We will be doing our party planning on Monday. One thing is for sure, though…where there is a party, there is food! Please bring a snack to share next Friday! Thanks!

Photos & Video – Mrs. Ellis showed the students a very cute video on Thursday that goes with the figurative language unit the students are studying. I have included it for your child to you…who knows, you might like it too! We also have some pictures of our Math estimating activity (with popcorn kernels) as well as figurative language centers. Enjoy!
