We are Planet Protectors!!! We have been busy learning about garbage, waste and a whole lot more! Yesterday afternoon we watched a CBC Marketplace piece that explored how large grocery stores throw out huge amounts of food each week! We have also been learning how we as families throw out about $700 worth of food a year! Yikes! We then decided to see how our intermediate department fares in terms of wasting perfectly good food! Each table group took a different classes garbage bins and sorted through the garbage. What we found was shocking! We found a variety of uneaten goods – from cookies, fruit, sandwiches, sealed snacks and yogurts. The class was appalled…and for good reason! We talked about how ‘knowledge is power’ and how we, as a class of Grade 5’s, can create change! We brainstormed ideas and came up with a plan:
- have a bake sale to raise money to purchase compost bins
- educate our department on the waste we create
- teach them how to use compost bins in their classrooms
- maintain the compost bins via our school garden compost bin
This is the project that we will be documenting and submitting for the Science World Green Games. If we win the games then we will receive an overnight at Science World as our prize! Yesterday was an AMAZING afternoon – for me as a teacher and for the students. There was authentic learning taking place and the class was so passionate about taking action and making a difference in our school community! I am excited to see where this journey will take us!

Thursday Movie Afternoon & Early Dismissal: Just a reminder that next Thursday afternoon we are watching “The Star” in the chapel as an intermediate department. Students can bring their pillows/comfy blankets as well as snacks to eat during the movie. Students will be dismissed right after the primary Christmas Concert, which will end at approx. 2pm.
The countdown is on! We have two weeks until Christmas break! woo hoo! We have a few things coming up these next couple of weeks so please keep reading!

Intermediate Ski Trip
Our annual ski trip is coming up and I wanted to send out some information to help you prepare for the event before the Christmas vacation hit us. Our ski trip is going to be on Friday, February 7th at Manning Park. This is always an exciting trip and the students look forward to hitting the ski hills and having some fun.
The registration happens in two parts: an online registration and the payment portion. To help with understanding the process, I have sent home detailed instructions containing all the information you will need to know in order to begin registration.
The online registration begins December 9 and will be open until the 18th of December. Ski trip payments can be made January 8th and 9th. We will have tables set up in the school lobby to facilitate payments for the trip. The online portion must be completed prior to the payment dates. Also note that if you are going to be coming with the school group, you will need to have your criminal records check up-to-date in order to come with us. You can check with the office as to how to best complete the records check.
If you have any questions, you can contact myself or Mr. Hancock.
Science Conversations: Your child brought home some “Science homework” – which is signing a booklet and having some family conversations around garbage. Please take time to look over and sign the booklet this weekend, and start some conversations with your family around the topic of garbage (there are guiding questions in the booklet). The booklets need to be returned on Monday.
Food Drive – please keep sending in the macaroni and cheese this week!
Bible Memory Verse – The new passage went home and is also on the blog.

You may have been hearing about “Planet Protectors” these last couple of days…maybe you even heard your child singing the theme song!!
We have started a new Science Unit on the environment called “Planet Protector Academy”. This trains students as superheros of environmental protection! This is a GREAT six week program (from BC) that takes students through six modules:
- operation garbage watch (this week)
- operation love food, hate waste
- operation food scraps
- operation waste-free lunch
- operation buy smart
- operation green cycle
Each week is a new focus and there is an at-home component as well. Your child has brought home their booklet and will ask you to read and sign a couple of pages, as well as engage in discussions around the topic of the week.
In conjunction with “Planet Protector Academy”, I have signed our classroom up for the Green Games, put on by Science World. This is a contest where schools or classrooms can submit any eco-action project, with a chance to win prizes! In January our class will be planning and implementing a project to help our school become more ‘green’. We have yet to firm up any plans but we will be starting this project from the ground up! I will be taking pictures and documenting the process, with hopes to make positive changes in our school AND win a prize!
If we do win the grand prize, we will win an overnight trip to Science World! Soooo exciting!
Thank you in advance for supporting your child with their weekly ‘at home missions’…we appreciate it!
Good morning,
Science quizzes are coming home today. Please take a look at the quiz, sign it and return it this week. If you would like your child to take a re-test please write that at the top of the quiz. Re-tests will happen this Friday.
