Hope you are having a wonderful start to the long weekend!  I’ll keep this short and sweet…just a few announcements and the calendar of upcoming dates.

Class Photos on Tuesday:  We will be having our class photos Tuesday morning!  Hoping the weather isn’t rainy so we can have them outdoors!

Math Mayhem on February 22nd: 

Are you ready for some Math Mayhem? Highroad Academy is hosting an exciting math event on Feb 22 from 6:30-8, and you won’t want to miss it!

This event, organized by the High School math students, is open to all kids in grades K-9, and it’s the perfect opportunity to have fun while improving your math skills. The High School have promised an evening of math games and activities that are sure to challenge and engage kids of all ages.

But, there’s a catch – parents need to come too! If you’re in grade 6 or under, you’ll need to bring your parents with you to the event. The organizers want to make sure everyone has a great time, but they also want to ensure everyone is supervised and safe.

So, what should you bring? A “ready to play” attitude! Come prepared to have fun and learn at the same time. You’ll be playing games, solving puzzles, and doing other activities that will help you improve your math skills without even realizing it.

Math Mayhem is an excellent opportunity to make math fun and accessible for all kids!

So mark your calendars for Feb 22 from 6:30-8, and get ready for Math Mayhem at Highroad Academy. Don’t forget to bring your parents, a great attitude, and be ready to have some fun!

Pink Shirt Day – Students can wear a pink shirt on Wednesday and we will spend some time learning and doing activities related to this important day.

It has been a productive week and we are gearing up to finish a number of units.  Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been working on:

Math:  This week we are finishing up our unit on 3D shapes.

Language Arts & Science:  We have finished our non-fiction reading unit and are finishing our persuasive writing unit this week.  Students are completing their final writing piece on their favourite superhero and have combined their learning about non-fiction text features & Respiratory systems to create a brochure.  The final touches will be put on their projects this week and we will then begin a new LA unit.

French:  We completed our French unit on ‘states of being’ and greetings last week and will begin our next unit on Numbers & Colours this week.

Bible:  Students are working on an independent topical study where they have chosen a theme (when I am sad, lonely, joyful, have sinned etc.) and are looking for verse related to their topic as well as responding to those verses.  We will continue working on that this week.

Art:  We are learning about value and are working on a Valentine’s Art shading project.

Things coming up…

Math Mayhem:  We are excited that Math Mayhem is back!  This is an evening where high school students put together fun Math games and your families get to come and enjoy a fun-filled evening!  Here are the details:  February 22nd for k-9 students.  It takes place from 6:30 – 8:00.  Students in Grades 6 and under must be accompanied by a parent.

Valentine’s Day:  There are a couple of things on Tuesday – Pay to wear casual ($2 minimum) & hot lunch for those who ordered through munch-a-lunch.  Students can hand out cards in the morning if they decide to fill them out.  Please send your child with a bag on Tuesday as they will likely have lots of cards and treats to bring home.

Upcoming Dates:

We had another great week here in the Grade 5 classroom!  The students earned a class party last week and asked if their Grade 1 buddies could join them for the party!  It was a lovely time on Tuesday and I know the buddies were thrilled to be invited!  On Friday we said goodbye to our short-term international student, Lily.  Some students in the class planned a surprise going away party for her and we had fun celebrating her time with us.

Here are a few things coming up:

Valentine’s Pay to Wear Casual:  Students can make a minimum $2 donation to support our missions team heading to Guatemala over spring break.

Genius Hour Begins this Week:  This Wednesday we are having our Genius Hour kickoff assembly and will begin Genius Hour this coming Friday.  I will have more information coming home with next week’s blog post.
