Weekly Update

Another great week in the Grade Five classroom.  We had our elections this week and each group did SO WELL!  Congratulations to team Sloth for winning our election.  I was proud of each group for the way they worked together and the effort they put into their campaigns.

Here are a few things coming up:

French Quiz on Tuesday:  Students brought home a french colour quiz sheet this week and will have a quiz on Tuesday.

Track Meet This Thursday:

We wanted to send a reminder regarding the upcoming track and field day happening on Thursday, April 27th. This year we are excited to once again participate in the annual Track Meet hosted by Regent Academy, an independent school in Surrey. Please note the change in venue this year. The field we will be using is the Ocean Athletics Track and Field Club South Surrey Surrey Athletic Park – 14578 20 Ave on Field #4. This event is considered a ‘standards meet’, so all students in grades 4-6 get to participate. Each grade participates in five events, and they are ranked first, second, third or participation based on certain standards set for each grade and event. This is a great track meet that allows all our students to compete with several other contestants from schools of the same size and level as our school.

For the Track Meet, the bus/shuttle will be leaving at approx. 7:00 am and returning at approx. 3:45 pm depending on traffic. Space is limited on the bus and shuttle, and we are hoping that some parents may be able to drive their children so as to ease the numbers on the bus/shuttle.

Being the end of April, there is definitely a chance of cooler weather and rain. Below is a list of items your child will need:

  • Warm rain proof coat
  • Water bottle
  • Warm clothing suitable for running in if it gets too cold for Highroad gym shorts and shirt
  • Food and snacks for the day (there will be no canteen at the fields)
  • Hat
  • Umbrella

If you have not sent your permission form back yet, please do so as soon as possible. We are also hoping that some parents might be able to help volunteer.  Please let me know if you are able to join us and help out! If you have any questions, you may refer them to Pamela Goosen or Ian Hancock.

Weekly Update

We had a great week here in the Grade 5 classroom!  The students have been gearing up for the big classroom election that begins on Monday!  By Wednesday students will be voting and we will have our official winners!

A few notes…

Bible Memory Verse:  Please ensure your child is memorizing their verse each week.  A sheet went home last week and there was a large number of students scrambling to memorize their verse in class today.  I do not send home a lot of homework, but do expect that time is taken at home to memorize their verse.

Intermediate Track Meet: I have received most of the forms for the track meet.  If you haven’t returned your form, please do so on Monday.

Jersey Return:  Mr. Milec would like the basketball jerseys returned as soon as possible.  You can bring them to the classroom or the office.

Upcoming Dates:

Apr. 27 – Intermediate Track and Field

Apr. 28 – Pro-D

May 4 – Star Wars/Super Hero Day

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Update

I hope you and your family had a fun and restful spring break!  We had a great week here in the Grade 5 classroom!  Below I will give you a snapshot of what we are working on this April:

Math:  we have begun our unit on fractions and looked at fractions as part of an area and a set.

Writing:  April is Poetry month!  We have a poetry slam happening and we are writing poems that will be made into a published book.

Reading:  On Tuesday the students entered “Starbooks Cafe” where they had a chance to sample a variety of snacks and look through different books.  They then chose a few ‘favourites’ and have now been put into a Literature Circle group based on their selection.  We will begin this next week.

Social Studies:  It’s election time here in the Grade 5 classroom.  Students have been put into parties, selected a mascot and are working on their campaigns.  We will soon start our election process where each party gives a series of speeches…with a vote at the end!

Science:  Before Spring Break we planted our seed potatoes.  Students were amazed at how the plants have begun growing.  This week we added more soil and water to our plants.  In the next couple of weeks we will bring them outside to the garden.

French:  we are learning about French colours

Bible:  We learned the story of Easter this week and will continue with our unit on Prayer next week:

Upcoming Events:

Track Meet:  This year we are excited to once again participate in the annual Track Meet hosted by Regent Academy, an independent school in Surrey.  This event is on Thursday, April 27th at Bear Creek Park.

As all students are participating in this track meet, track and field practices will take place during our regularly scheduled Phys Ed times.

For the Track Meet, the bus/shuttle will be leaving at approx. 7:00am and returning at approx. 3:45pm depending on traffic. Space is limited on the bus and shuttle, and we are hoping that some parents may be able to drive their child so as to ease the numbers on the bus/shuttle.

We are also hoping that some parents might be able to help volunteer. In the past, we have had a wonderful day encouraging our students and building community and school spirit together. If you are able to help out, please let us know as we would love to have you join us. Parents would be involved in helping to record results and supervise students in the stands. There will be ample opportunity to see your child participate! Please note that any parents wanting to help will need a current criminal record check on file with the office.

Your child should have brought home a permission form yesterday. Please sign the permission slip below to signify that you are aware of the dates and are allowing your child to participate. If you have any questions, you may refer them to Pamela Goosen or Ian Hancock.

Jersey Return:  As basketball has come to an end, we ask that all students return their jersey’s next week to Mr Milec.

Upcoming Dates:

Apr. 10 – Easter Monday

Apr. 27 – Intermediate Track and Field

Apr. 28 – Pro-D

Here are a few pictures from this week.  Wishing you a wonderful Easter weekend.
