Weekly Update

One more week until spring break!  I have been so impressed with the students this week – they. have continued to stay focused and work hard.

Here are a few important pieces of information for you:

Immigration Presentations: This week, we wrapped up our immigration presentations. It’s truly inspiring to see the diverse countries represented in our classroom and hear the stories of courage and perseverance. I believe that understanding our family’s history is incredibly valuable as it allows us to appreciate our roots and feel grateful for the opportunity to call Canada our home.

Grades 4-6 Pancake Breakfast on Thursday: We are looking for some help making and serving pancakes on Thursday.  If you are able, please consider helping us on Thursday morning between 7:00 – 8:30.  If you are unable to arrive at 7 but can come a bit later, that would be great.  Please email me at pgoosen@highroadacademy.com if you can help.  For those kiddos enjoying pancakes, they will be served in the gym from 7:45 – 8:30.

Little Hoopsters & Diggers:  A flyer is coming home this week with information about little hoopsters and diggers.  Please register your child if interested.

Storybook Character Dress Up: On Wednesday, March 13th, we will dress up as our favourite storybook character!  If your child would not like to dress up, they can wear their uniform.

Dates for March:

Wed, March 13th – Storybook Character Dress Up

Thurs, March 14th – Pancake Breakfast.  Students eat from 7:45 – 8:30

Fri, March 15th – 11:35 Dismissal & Interim Reports Go Home

Weekly Update

We had a great week here in the Grade 5 classroom!  One big event was the BEAT THE TEACHER reveal.  I read a whopping 16 books…the most ever for me!  Students worked so hard and I bought 13 slurpees on Thursday!  Students have one more opportunity to beat me as we will have our final reveal in June. Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been working on:

Math:  We finished our unit on graphing and will be starting area and perimeter next week.

Science:  Beginning our learning on Body Systems.  First up, the digestive system!

Writing:  Working on Persuasive Writing

Reading:  How to read and use non-fiction text.  This includes learning about text features, finding important information, asking questions to help find answers and summarizing.

Social Studies:  Working on immigration projects. Students wrote out their immigration stories (they are SO good) & we will present them this week.

French:  Finished up our learning on the Quebec Winter Carnival and began learning numbers 1-10.

Bible:  Easter

Pancake Breakfast: We are excited to announce the Intermediate Pancake Breakfast, which will take place on March 14 from 7:45am to 8:30am. This event is open to Intermediate students only and will be held in the gym. Students will be able to access the gym through the side door. It promises to be a fun-filled morning with delicious pancakes and a chance for students to gather as an Intermediate Department.

To ensure the success of this event, we are seeking parent volunteers to help us out. If you are available, please let me know. We would need helpers starting at about 7:00. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated, and it is a great opportunity to get involved and support our school community.

Class Photos are this Wednesday, March 6th.

Math Mayhem:  Join us on Tuesday, March 5th from 6:30 – 8:00 for an exciting evening of math games hosted by Mrs. Bartel’s Grades 10-12 Math students. Parents are required to attend with their children. We can’t wait to see you there!

PE Gym Strip:  Please ensure that students have their gym strips at school each week.  We have PE on Wednesdays and Fridays.  Students must also have proper PE footwear.  Boots are not considered appropriate wear for PE.

Uniforms:  Please ensure that your child comes to school with the appropriate uniform pieces.  This includes shoes or boots, which need to be black, white, brown or grey. No other colours are permitted on shoes or boots.  Socks are to be black, grey, navy or white. 😀 I will be sending reminders home next week if your child does not have the correct uniform pieces.

Valentine’s Day Party:  The class earned a class party and we thought it would be fun to have it on Valentine’s Day.  Please send along a snack to share.

Weekly Update

We’ve had a great week in the Grade Five classroom!  Here are a few things coming up over the next week…

Bible Memory Verse is due on Monday: Please encourage your child to memorize their weekly verses.

MESSY Art Project on Wednesday – Bring clothes that can get dirty!!  Students will wear their uniforms until lunch and then change into tops and bottoms that can get dirty.  We will be working with tempera paint, which washes out of clothing, but I would hate for your child to come home with paint-filled uniforms!

Immigration Project:   We’re excited to be starting a new Social Studies unit on immigration. Your child has come home with an Immigration interview sheet, and we’d love for them to interview a family member over the next week to hear their immigration story. This could be you, a grandparent, or a great-grandparent. If the person who immigrated isn’t available for an interview, please have someone who knows the immigration story step in for the interview. These interview sheets are due on Thursday, February 15th.

Clean Water Fundraiser:  Please consider supporting this important fundraiser!  Our goal is to raise $6,000 in February. Donations can be made online: Clean Water Project Donations (jotform.com) or at the school office.  All donations $20 or above will receive a tax receipt.

A reminder that next Friday is a Pro D Day and the following Monday is Family Day.

Upcoming Dates:

Wed, Feb 14th – Valentine Colour Dress Up Day

Fri, Feb 16th – Pro D Day

Mon, Feb 19th – Family Day

Thurs, Feb 22nd – Pink Shirt Day

Boys Basketball Skills Training this Friday!

Come and join the free basketball boy’s skills practice this Friday, February 9th from 3:00 – 4:30.  Coach Kyle Graves from Chilliwack Basketball Club will be leading this practice.  He has coached my son Riley for several years and he has been an excellent coach!  This is a great opportunity for your son to attend a high-quality practice.
