Wrapping Up a Great First Week

Well, we all survived our first week back. 🙂  In fact, we did more than survive it, I think we learned a few new things and had some fun too.  The students kicked off the year in math with some place value centers.  Here are a few pictures from the first day working on them.

Metacognition – Be sure to ask your child what it means.  Today we learned a little about it and also what fake reading and real reading look like.  Fake reading is when we sound really good reading aloud but we don’t really understand what we just read.  Real reading means that we are actually THINKING while we are reading.  We made a reading salad together (not very edible though) and talked about what it ‘sounds like’ to think while you are reading a text.  Remember students, we always want more lettuce (thinking) than tomatoes (text).

We can’t wait to continue working together to try new things, challenge each other, to celebrate our achievements and encourage each other when we fail.  We ‘love’ how failure reminds us that we still have so much to learn.

Thanks for a fabulous first week back, Grade 5/6 students!  Looking forward to an incredible year together.

Let’s Get Building!

Yesterday we did a very fun exercise that helped us look at the importance of working together as a team. Each pair was given four straws, two paper clips, two pieces of newspaper and 19 small strips of tape. The task was to build the tallest tower…with two minutes to plan and five minutes to build! The kids were SO excited for this task and had a lot of fun building their towers! We also had a great discussion afterwards about what it means to ‘work together’…take a look for yourself! Well done, grade 5/6!

Thank You!

It has been such a pleasure working with your amazing kids this year!  We want to say a huge thank you  for all of your words of encouragement, gifts and thank you cards.  We feel so blessed.

Below is the genius hour video from this morning’s assembly – just in case you want to watch it again!  =)

Have a wonderful summer!

End of Year Fun!

Today we played the student-made board games that the class created to go with our final year-end novel, Wonder.  It was very entertaining and I was very impressed with the effort put into them. Below are a few pictures.

THURSDAY PANCAKE LUNCH:  No need to bring a lunch on Thursday since Mrs. Mackie and Mrs. Goosen are making a pancake lunch for the grade 6 class.  Students are also invited to bring treats to share for Thursday’s afternoon class party.

FULL-DRESS FRIDAY:  Please remember that all students need to be in full-dress uniform for the assembly on Friday morning.  Assembly starts at 9:30am and classes will be dismissed for the day immediately following, at approximately 10:30am.

This is What is Happening This Week

Just a few things to know for this week:

WAVE POOL: Tomorrow we go to the wave pool for the afternoon.  Please note that all students MUST BRING A LUNCH.  They will NOT have an opportunity to buy pizza since we’ll be leaving before the pizza is for sale.

BAKE SALE:  Wednesday is the bake sale to raise money for the Highroad Garden.  $1 a piece.

FUN DAY:  Friday is Intermediate Fun Day all morning.  Remember that there is a noon dismissal this day.

Today we finished reading the novel, Wonder by RJ Palacio.  I even managed to avoid doing the ugly cry, it was touch-and-go at times but I pulled it together. 🙂  What an incredible book!  Be sure to ask your child who their favorite character was or what was their favorite part.  I highly recommend all of the adults picking up a copy for themselves.  Wonder may be classified as ‘teen fiction’ but I’m confident that any adult would enjoy it just as much – maybe even more.

No Spelling words or Bible Memory this week.  It’s the final countdown…

Highroad Garden & Bake Sale

We are excited about the Highroad Garden that is underway.  Each class has been tasked to raise $200 to help with the supplies needed for the garden.  So far our class has raised $23 and we would love to meet our goal by June 11th.

On June 11th the primary department is putting on a bake sale to help raise funds for the garden.  The sale will take place at recess, lunch and after school.  All items are $1.  Please come and support the HRA garden bake sale!

Art Gala on Friday!

Art Gala Tomorrow Night!

Come on out tomorrow night from 6:30 – 8:00 for Highroad Academy’s First Annual Art Gala! Students from grades 4 – 6 will be showcasing different pieces of art they have chosen as their favorite pieces from the many projects they have worked on this year.

As an exciting addition to this year’s Art Gala, you can download the free Kaywa QR reader app on your mobile device and hear students talking about their artwork. The app is free and available for both Android and Apple phones. Simply download the app, scan the QR codes next to selected pieces of art and hear students talking about their artwork!

Please remember to send the specified snack items for your class with your child on Friday morning. The Church Cafe will also be open. Thanks to Ms. Evans and Mrs. Goosen for helping to get the Cafe Open.

Our class needs to bring a small pack (4-6) of juice boxes on Friday morning.

Spring Sing & Art Gala

We have a busy week this week with the Spring Sing on Monday evening, the Track Meet on Tuesday and the Art Gala on Friday evening.

Just a reminder that students should meet upstairs in the garage by 6:45 on Monday evening.  They need to wear their uniform but it does not need to be full dress – shorts and polo shirts are great.

We are looking forward to the art gala this Friday evening.  We would ask that all students from our class bring one package of juice boxes for the event.  If you could bring them on Friday morning that would be great.  The cafe will be open  if you wish to purchase a coffee beverage.
