Mission: Guatemala

We are excited to announce a partnership with the grade 6 class and 2 of the high school students that will be going on the HRA missions trip to Guatemala during Spring Break.  Our class has been appointed Megan and Kailey.  We will have the girls join our class on a few occasions between now and then so that the grade 6 students can get to know them.  We have already had a time together where we were able to ask them what they were most excited about and most fearful about, in regards to the trip.  We will continue to pray for good health and safety while they are travelling, as well as many opportunities for them to connect with the local people.

In preparation for the trip, the missions team is asking for the following donations to bring along.  We will have a box in our class to collect these items during the next several weeks.  The toys, t-shirts, & hats/gloves can be gently used or new.  The school supplies and hygiene items should be in new condition.

SMALL Toys – vehicles (Hot Wheels, etc.), dolls (Polly Pockets, etc), marbles, skipping ropes, anything else that is small

T-SHIRTS – without large logos and in good condition

HATS – summer, packable (squishable), logos small or not present

GLOVES – Light weight (summer) but heavy duty

SCHOOL SUPPLIES- pencils with pencil sharpeners, erasers, pens, rulers, crayons, etc

PERSONAL HYGIENE – soap, toothbrush and toothpaste, comb, hairbrushes (small), hair accessories

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!!

Calling All Collections

We are starting to look at classification in Science and I would like the students to bring in a collection of some sort this THURSDAY.    This could be anything from buttons, sports cards, jewelry, coins, photos, stamps, lids…anything really.  They will need to bring approximately 20 – 25 items in their collection.

Thanks!  Mrs. Goosen

Important Final Ski Trip info

The count down is on regarding the ski trip. The Intermediate ski trip is this Friday, Jan. 24th. I was informed today that there is one more waiver form to be completed and returned by Thursday.  Please check with your child on Tuesday to get it signed and returned ASAP.

On Friday, if your child is riding the bus, please have them to the school lobby by6:30, as the bus is scheduled to leave at 6:45 am (sharp).  We will not be able to delay for late comers. For the afternoon pickup, please be at the school at 4:30 pm. Please do not wait for a call from your child as this will delay the teachers having to wait as well.

Students should bring plenty of food and juice as we’ll be gone for about 10 hours. Please remember to bring your ski pass (if you have one), sleds & a helmet if you aren’t renting, plenty of warm clothes (a change of dry clothes is a good idea for the trip home), and something to do on the bus (no electronics please).  We’d appreciate your prayers for safety, and God’s protection on our day.

PS. Parents, if you are driving to the ski hill, you do not need to meet us at the school first.  In fact we encourage you to arrive at the ski hill ahead of the bus as the rental office is willing to process your rentals before the bus arrives. Just let them know that you are part of the Highroad Intermediate field trip and make sure they check your name off of the registration list. Tell them your ID number and that will help them find your registration.

Your child’s teacher will be giving out the ID numbers to help facilitate finding your names on the registration list (or you may ask at the office as they will also have a list.) When the bus arrives, lift tickets will be handed out first, and then those who are taking lessons will be given their rentals next.

We’re looking forward to a great day at Manning!  See you there!

The Incredible 3D Cell Project

Over the last two weeks the students have been learning about cells and this week made an edible plant and animal cell as we learned the function of the different organelles.  Yesterday students received their first at-home Science project – a model of a 3D plant or animal cell.  The project is due back on FRIDAY, JANUARY 31ST.  I have included the outline here in case it gets lost etc.  Please ensure that the  cell reflection questions as well as the chart on the front page are filled out and returned with the project.

Students are encouraged be as creative as possible!  A quick google search on ‘3D animal cell model’ or ‘3D plant cell model’ will show you lots of fantastic examples of models for your child to look at.

Please email me if you have any questions about the project!

More Research Websites for Olympic Sport Project

As I sit at home on day 3 battling a ridiculous flu bug, the headache has finally lifted and the boredom is about driving me crazy.  I’m booting up the computer for a few minutes to post a couple of encyclopedia-type website for kids that may help them with their note-taking for their Olympic Sport project.  Both are listed on the side column titled, ‘Websites to Check out’.  The first is factmonster.com  which is full of lots of great info and visuals.  The second is the Britannica Encyclopedia for kids.  Don’t forget the various Olympic websites that I posted last week.  They are also links on the list.

Well, before my husband starts making comments that I should be resting and stop working, I’ll quickly log off, pump some more fever-fighting tylenol, and have another nap.  Hope you’re all having a wonderful, healthy weekend!  Feel free to say a couple of prayers of health for the Derksen household – specifically myself and Nyla – somehow the boys have stayed free of the germs so far.
