Weekly Update

It has been a beautiful weekend here in Chilliwack – I hope you were able to enjoy the gorgeous weather this weekend!  We are so thankful for the incredible October we have been having, especially with our Cheam Wetlands Day approaching.  It looks like it will be a sunny day on Tuesday and we are excited about spending this time building community within our intermediate department!

The grade 5’s have been busy these last couple of weeks and we wanted to give you a snapshot of what we have been doing in our classroom:

Math:  We have finished up our unit on place value and are now reviewing our basic facts.  Last week we worked on addition (up to 5 digit) and are currently working on subtraction.  Multiplication and division will soon follow.  Many students have also been working on memorizing their multiplication facts – we encourage students to continue practicing each and every week!

Writing:  We are currently working on “Building Better Writing Responses”.  Last week students reviewed the parts of a paragraph and focused on starting with an interesting introduction.  This week we will work on writing with complete sentences.

Reading: we started working with questioning – talking about quick questions and deep thinking questions.

Social Studies:  the students were getting ready for their class vote.  Students have been researching about one or two candidates running for mayor or city council. They had a chance Friday afternoon to share their findings with the class and then voted.

French:  working on greetings and the French alphabet

Science:  We have started a Science unit on Mixtures and Solutions.  The students experimented mixing various liquids and solids and recorded their observations.  We did some reading on the difference between a mixture and a solution and we then dove into ‘What is a Mixture’ and made a delicious ‘trail mix mixture’.  This week we will look at what a solution is.

We have a busy week ahead so please read on…

Cheam Wetlands – This is happening this Tuesday!  Please have students wear Orange Shirts in support of Orange Shirt Day, make sure they are dressed in layers for the weather (casual clothes) and ensure they pack a lunch & water.  We still need a couple of parent volunteers.  Please email Ms. Froyland at kfroyland@highroadacademy.com if you are able to attend.

Parent-Teacher Interviews this Wednesday – Thank you for signing up to meet with us on Wednesday!  Interviews will take place in my classroom.  I am REALLY hoping to stay on time!  I will have a schedule on the outside of my door.  Could you please knock when it is your time – this will help me stick to the schedule and not put other families with multiple interviews behind.

Highroad Garden Soup Lunch – This Friday, October 26th we will have soup from our very own Highroad garden!  So no need to pack a sandwich on Friday!  We do need 6 dozen buns brought in on Thursday.  If you would be able to send 1 dozen buns in, please send me an email at pgoosen@highroadacademy.com

Spelling List – courage, period, information, serve, breathe, present, brace, engage, journal, addition

BMV – students will say their Bible Memory Verse on Friday, October 26th instead of Wednesday.
