Final Chapel & Awards Presentation Changes

IMPORTANT INFO!!  Please note the following:

Worship Chapel

In past years, we have usually ended our year by awarding our Term 3 Citizenship and Academic Awards to our students, as well as having each class showcased through a performance or video, at a Year End Assembly. As we look ahead to the end of this year, we would like to do something that is a little more low-key and better celebrates our journey with God during the past year.

This year, our citizenship awards and academic awards will be presented during our final chapel/assembly time. For the intermediates, this will be happening in the Chapel on June 20 starting at 9:15 during our usual chapel time.

On the last day of school, students from both the primary and intermediate will gather in the Chapel at 11:15 to worship and pray. We will be singing some songs, praying for our summer, hearing a message from one of our teachers and just spending some last few moments together before our year is finished. Just to note, students will be dismissed at 12:00 from their classrooms on June 23rd. This is a change from last year, where students were dismissed right after the assembly.

We’re hoping that this change will provide a more spiritual end to our school year and that students will enjoy an opportunity to celebrate God’s work in our lives as well as an opportunity to pray for the summer.

Our Class Election Results In!

We enjoyed an entire day learning about the different types of government and the BC political party platforms.  We finished off the day with a class election and it will be very interesting to see if our results reflect the Provincial results later tonight.  It was a fun day full of different activities, videos, and discussions about government.  The students did a great job of working through difficult vocabulary and complex topics.  Way to go, grade 5/6 students!!  It was a great day seeing you so excited and passionate about politics.

Here are our final results with the NDP squeaking out the win.  Annie was our government official, handing out and collecting the ballots.

2:30 pm Dismissal This Friday

This Friday there is a funeral scheduled to be held at City Life Church and it is expected to be very well-attended.  To help create a less chaotic parking lot pick-up time, Highroad has decided to dismiss the school at 2:30pm to accommodate the traffic.

Please pick up your children K-12 at 2:30pm this Friday, March 31st.  Thank you for your understanding!

Fun in Britannia

What a fantastic day at the Britannia Mine Museum!  Thanks to all the students for displaying excellent behaviour throughout the day and showing interest in all the activities.  Thank you to the parents and grandparents that joined us too, your behaviour was also very acceptable.  😉  Thankfully the weather cooperated, though it was very snowy and chilly at the mine.  Hopefully all of our toes will warm up soon.

Britannia Driving Update!

We are now able to take BOTH the school bus and the shuttle to Britannia which means that parents can now travel WITH us.  If you still want to carpool on your own, that is fine, but we have plenty of room for you on the bus/shuttle.  I will be sending out confirmation e-mails to everyone that signed up to come along so please check your inboxes later today.  If you have any questions, please e-mail Melanie at mderksen@highroadacademy.com.

Britannia and Biographies!

The Britannia permission slip went home today so please fill it in and return by next Tuesday.  Parents are invited to come along.  Tickets are $17 each (no cost for students) and parents will need to arrange carpooling together since there is no space on the bus.

Biography Projects:

Starting next week, the students will be creating Biography Lapbooks on a famous person of their choice.  Grade 5’s must choose a famous Canadian and Grade 6’s much choose a famous non-Canadian. 🙂  Below are some sample names, but they can choose someone who is not listed – just get it ok’d by Mrs. Derksen.

Parents, could you please help your child to choose a person to focus on by next Tuesday?  It is very important that your child actually have an interest in learning about the person. 🙂  The person may be alive or deceased.  It would be helpful if the famous person has done some kind of ‘humanitarian’ work in their life or raised awareness for an issue (example, mental illness) to use their popularity for good.  Thanks so much for your support!

Remember that your child does not have to pick someone on the list, these names are an extra help if they are stuck.

Here are a few pictures of Mrs. Derksen’s sample project.  She chose Princess Diana as her subject.
