Weekly Update

We had a great week this week!  Students are enjoying the City of Ember novel study and are getting ready to do a classmate biography in writing – a precursor to our Olympic Athlete biography.  In Science we are learning about Force and Motion and are getting set to do a friction experiment next week.  Lots is happening in the Grade 5 classroom!  Below is some important information for you as well as some dates to put into your calendar.

Ski Trip Information:  The ski trip is coming up this Friday.  If your child is riding the bus then please have them at school by 6:30 as the bus is leaving by 6:45 SHARP.  If your child is driving up with your family then please write a note in their planner stating that they will NOT be riding the bus.  We want to make sure we have our bus numbers correct.  We look forward to a wonderful day on the ski hill!

Pink Shirt Day:  Wednesday, February 28th is national Pink Shirt Day.  If you would like to order a pink shirt for your child the cost is $8.  Please send a note with the size, quantity and the  money to me by Thursday, November 25th.  On Pink Shirt Day your child will also be able to wear a pink shirt from home – we ask that it is at least 50% pink.

Math Mayhem:  Come and join us in the gym on Tuesday, January 30th for our annual Math Mayhem event.  This fun (and often candy-filled) event runs from 6:30 – 8:00 and has students playing a variety of fun Math games.

No Spelling or Vocabulary This Week – Due to a short week we will not have spelling or vocabulary work due.

Important Dates:

Monday, January 22: Pro-D Day
Thursday, January 25th: Canada Colours Dress-Up
Friday, January 26th: Ski Trip
Tuesday, January 30th: Math Mayhem

Wednesday, January 31st:  Knight’s Day

We have some photos to share with you from the last two weeks.  Elijah Elgersma (Steffen’s brother) raises goats and brought two of his newest baby goats for a visit.  They were super cute and the students loved having these little visitors join us!

The students also worked hard getting back into the routine of things these last two weeks.  They had a mystery prize board that had ‘routines’ on them (quietly working by 9:00 bell, sitting during lunch time etc.).  Each time they followed one of the routines, that tab was taken off and the mystery prize was slowly revealed.  The students earned their prize on Monday afternoon – cookies and hot chocolate!  Their hard work paid off!  Enjoy the pictures below and have a great week!
