Weekly Update

We had a great week here in the Grade 5 Classroom!  Students have been working hard and I thought that I would give you a snapshot of what we have been doing in each of our subjects:

Math – We are working on division with and without remainders

Language Arts –  We have started the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and are also learning about text structures of nonfiction text

Socials – We have just started a new unit on Propaganda & are finishing up our current events maps

Science – This week we had Mrs. Johnsrude, a high school Science teacher,  and one of her students come in teach us chemistry!  We learned about the Ph scale and students tested a bunch of liquids to see if they were acids or bases.  We are ready to start the next section of our Mixtures and Solutions unit on the different ways solutions can be separated.

Phys Ed – Basketball

Bible – This week we are starting our unit on Advent

Food Drive:  Please continue sending in cans this week!

Scholastic Orders Due Tomorrow

Save the Date:  Our Manning Park ski trip is coming up on Friday, January 25th.  Information and registration packages will be coming home soon!

No Spelling this week.

Pro D Day Friday – reminder that there is no school for students this Friday.

We have a number of fun events planned for December.  Below are some dates & information for you.

Decorating our Classroom:  On Monday, December 3rd we will be having a classroom decorating party!  Please feel free to send along any unused Christmas decorations – they will be returned at the end of the month!  We would love cute window stickers but please do not send along cans of fake snow.

Cookie Decorating Party:  On Friday, December 14th we will spend some time decorating sugar cookies!  I will provide the cookies and table groups will bring the icing and decorations.

Class Christmas Lunch & White Elephant Gift Exchange:  On Wednesday, December 19th we will enjoy a meal together and then have a fun Secret Santa gift exchange.  Each child will be asked to bring one lunch item (1 dozen buns, lunch meat etc.) and a wrapped $5 gift for this day.  More information to come!

Last Day of School Festivities:  The last day of school is Thursday, December 20th and we have a 2 pm dismissal.  In the morning we will watch the primary Christmas concert dress rehearsal and in the afternoon we will come together as an intermediate department and watch a Christmas movie in the chapel.
