Weekly Update

We had a great week here in the Grade Five classroom.  Here’s a breakdown of what we did this week:

Math – we continued working on subtraction and will soon be starting our work on multiplication.

Language Arts  – students continued working on the novel “Wonder” and discussed perspective.  They started a new writing piece on a time they were brave and continued working on grammar through the picture book, “Firefly Mountain.”  We took advantage of the nice weather on Friday and spent our silent reading time in the garden!

Science – We continued working on Planet Protectors with this week focusing on the amount of food we throw into the garbage each week.  Friendly reminder to sign your child’s booklet and bring them back to school tomorrow.

Socials – We did our student vote on Thursday. We will tally up our votes together on Wednesday and compare it with the results of the October 24th provincial election. There was also a surprise time travelling guest that came and taught the lesson. Nellie McClung, Canadian hero, suffragette, author, MLA, and mother came from the past (in a very cool old-timey outfit) to tell the class all about how voting has changed in Canada. She was much better at making changes in the legislature than she was at taking selfies. Below are some pictures of our student vote.

Art – Thank you for all of the fun textured items! Our art projects are looking great!

Bible – We finished our unit on Identity in Christ.  Students worked on an art project where they chose their favourite ‘I Am” statements from the Bible…they look beautiful!  I have some pictures below for you to enjoy!

Hot Dog Day!

On Oct. 28, one of our fabulous local business’, Fraser Valley Roofing, has graciously agreed to sponsor a Hot Dog Day for our students. At lunch time, the food truck will be here to hand out hot dogs to our entire school! Each child will receive one hot dog and 1 bag of chips free of charge. Students do not need to sign up or send anything to receive the hot dog or chips. If students do not wish to have get a hot dog, they should bring their regular lunch and let their teacher know that they will not be having a hot dog on the day of the event. This should be a fun day as it is also Fall Colour Dress-up Day for our students!

Thanks to Fraser Valley Roofing for putting on this event for our school!

Weekly Update

Happy Friday to you!  We had a great week here in the Grade Five classroom!  Below is a snapshot of what we did in class this week, as well as a few other items for you.

Math:  We have begun reviewing our basic facts and are currently working on large digit subtraction.

Writing:  We continued working on our mentor sentences and finished up our first personal narrative piece.  Next week we will begin our second writing piece on a time your child had to be brave.

Science:  We have just started our Planet Protectors unit, which focuses on creating less garbage.  Students have brought home a booklet for you to sign and they may want to engage in discussions around how much garbage we create in our homes.  Please sign the forms and engage in a discussion with your child this weekend!

French:  We have started working on simple phrases in French – this week was oui and non.

Reading:  we continued to read Wonder. Students focused on making predictions as well as writing reflections.

Social Studies:  We are preparing to do a student vote next Thursday so we’ve spent some time discussing how our democratic system in Canada works and did an overview of the three major political parties in BC. Students are encouraged to discuss the leaders and parties with the adults in their lives and to listen to different perspectives. If you are interested in finding out which political party you most align with for the upcoming provincial election on October 24th you can use this tool to help: https://votecompass.cbc.ca we went through it as a class. You can skip the parts where it asks to fill in personal information.

Art:  We are almost done our elements of art project. Students have been asked to bring in textures for next Thursday so they can complete the final element.

A few other items…

Health Checks:  Please remember to complete your child’s health check each and every morning!

Dressing for the Weather:  We are spending time outside and in the garden this fall and winter – students need to be dressed appropriately for the rainy weather.   Please help your child remember to bring their jackets to school.  On Fridays we will head out to the garden to get rid of our department’s compost.  Rubber boots will be helpful on rainy weeks.

Pro D Day next Friday:  Just a reminder that the teachers will be in workshops all day!  It’s our turn to do some learning!

BMV on Thursday this week!

Composting:  Our class is the intermediate department’s “Green Team”.  This team collects all of the department’s compost each Friday, washes out the bins and disposes of the compost in the Highroad Garden.  Students will be put into teams and work together to keep this sustainable practice going in our department.

We had a great week here in the Grade Five classroom.  Here is a snapshot of our week:

Math – we finished place value and are beginning to work on basic operations.  A place value quiz is coming home today.  Please sign the front page and return on Tuesday.

Writing – we are beginning personal narratives.  Students have begun writing about themselves.  I look forward to learning more about the wonderful students in this class!  We also continued our mentor sentences program this week – breaking down and rebuilding strong sentences.

Reading – we began our first novel, Wonder.  Both Ms. Miller and I LOVE this novel and we are excited for the students to experience such amazing literature!

Social Studies – we finished up our current events map and have started learning about government.  Students were learning about the Rule of Law and why we elect our leaders.

Bible – last Bible class we looked at who we are – what are the things that make us unique.  This week we worked through different Bible passages and learned all the things that God says we are.

French – we finished up learning the alphabet and had a quiz this week.  Next week we will be learning about basic phrases…oui & non is first up!

Science – we looked at all of the resources that BC has…and we have a lot!  We then turned our focus towards the amount of food that Canadians waste each year!  We watched a CBC marketplace segment on garbage – it was VERY eye opening.  Next week we will be looking at ways to create less garbage and use more sustainable practices in our homes and school.

My apologies for not sending a blog post on the weekend – I was waiting for an upgrade to happen!  I wanted to send the French video home to you as this may help your child study for the French quiz we are having on Friday.

For the quiz, I will be saying various alphabet letters in French and they will have to write down the letter that they hear.  The quiz will be out of 10.
