Weekly Update

Good afternoon!  I hope you are having a wonderful start to the Family Day weekend!  We had a productive week here in the Grade Five classroom!  Rube Goldbergs were completed this week (I will send a blog post with the videos shortly) and the students did AN AMAZING JOB!  I was so impressed with the creativity in the projects, the students abilities to problem solve and work as a team.  Well done!  Students also had fun with their buddies, working together on a Valentine’s craft.

Here is a snapshot of what we did in class this week:

Math:  We are coming to the end of our division unit.  Students completed their division booklets, did an online ‘build a monster’ division problem solving activity and are working on a Movie Marathon division activity.  They will have a unit quiz this coming week and we will then move into algebraic equations (solving for the unknown).

Writing:  We have started our final persuasive writing project on the student’s favourite superhero.  This has a research component where the students use a couple of websites to read about and choose their favourite superhero.  This is a ‘show me what you know’ writing piece, where students will need to include all the elements of persuasive writing that we have learned about this year.

Science:  Rube Goldberg projects finished on Monday and we began our next unit on Mixtures and Solutions.  On Friday students experimented mixing a variety of solids and liquids together, observing their results.  We then read about mixtures, solutions and compound, and will delve deeper into that next week.

French:  We continued exploring the numbers 1-20.

Social Studies: This week we discussed push and pull factors of immigration. Each child has brought home a family immigration page to fill in with you. This is due Wednesday. If you need an extra copy please use the pictures of the assignment below.

Reading: Students practiced their oral stories and will present next Wednesday.

Upcoming Dates:

Feb. 15 – Family Day (no school)

Feb. 19 – Knights Day

Feb. 24 – Pink Shirt Day

Feb. 26 – Knights Day

Here’s some photos of our Science lesson and Valentine’s craft.  I will send a separate blog post with our Rube Goldberg videos shortly.
