First Week of School…

Welcome to our blog!  Ms. Miller and I have had a fantastic week with the class and we look  forward to spending the year with this amazing group of students.

You can expect a post from us at the end of each week.  Once a month we will give you an overview of what we are covering in the classroom. We will send weekly announcements and have a monthly calendar so you know what is happening both in our classroom and school.  We will also try and post pictures every couple of weeks.

September at A Glance:

Math:  place value

Writing:  mentor sentences – looking at high quality text to help us learn sentence structure and sentence building.  We will also be doing a writing assessment and working on vocabulary.

Reading:  building up our reading skills in the areas of metacognition, comprehension, schema and visualization.

Science:  learning about the scientific method and starting a unit on Mixtures and Solutions.

Health/Bible:  Growth Mindset

Social Studies:  government and the upcoming election

A Few Things…

Class Store:  This week your child applied for, and received a class jobl. At the end of the month they will pay rent for their desk and then have the opportunity to purchase items from the class store.  I have purchased a few items to get us started but would really appreciate any items that you could donate.  Any small toys your kids don’t use anymore, craft type items and any candy or chips are bit hits!  With Halloween candy in stores right now, these small treats make great class store items.  Please consider donations.  Thank you!

Class Photos:  Today your child brought home an information sheet about class photos.  They are taking place on Thursday, September 16th.

School Supplies:  Thank you for sending school supplies this week.  Quite a few students are missing dry erase markers.  Could you please ensure they have these next week as we use them daily for Math.  Thank you!

Scholastic Books:  I will send home monthly Scholastic book packages for you and your child to look through.  All ordering is now done online and my class code is at the top of the front page.  If you purchase and use the code, it helps me get new books for my classroom.

September Calendar:

Thursday, Sept 16th – individual photos

Friday, Sept 17 – Knight’s Day

Friday, Sept 24th – Knight’s Day

Wed, Sept 29th – Orange Shirt Day

First Week Video…enjoy!

The first day of school we talked about first day of school worries or anxieties.  Our verse for the day of Joshua 1:9, “Have I not commanded you?  Be strong and courageous.  Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”  We then wrote down things we may be worried about on a piece of paper, prayed over our worries, ripped them up and put them into a jar.  We then each took some ‘worry confetti’ and tossed it into the year, claiming a ‘happy school year’.

Welcome to Our Class!

Welcome to Mrs. Goosen and Ms. Miller’s Grade 5 class blog.  We are so excited to be starting a new year with you and look forward to getting to know you and your families.

On the first day of school a letter will be sent home for parents.  It will be one of the last paper newsletters that you will see.  All class information, notifications, assignments, important dates, etc will be posted here during the year.

We will subscribe you to our blog. You will receive an e-mail to confirm the subscription and then every time we make a new post.  Looking forward to a great year together!

Thought we’d share some pictures of our families!  Enjoy!
