Weekly Update

Happy Friday to you all!  We had a full week here in the Grade Five classroom and the students have been hard at work!  We have begun a new Math unit, learned about separating solutions, started brainstorming a new story and the students get to spend their hard earned money at the class store today!

Here are a few things for you to note:

Candy from home:  I really like to limit the amount of candy that comes into the classroom.  Students occasionally get a small piece of candy from me and they can purchase candy at the school store at the end of the month.  I would ask that students not bring any candy from home, as excess sugar for students = unfocus in the classroom.  Thank you for helping us with this!

Masks:  Just a friendly reminder to send your child to school with a mask every day.  We are going through a high number of reusable masks and it would be helpful if students brought them from home.

Library Fundraisers:  The library is having two fundraisers to help raise money to purchase new books.

  1.  Starburst in a Jar – students can bring $1 and guess how many starbursts are in the jar.  Winner gets the candy!
  2. SinAmen Bun fundraising sheet went home yesterday.  Please send your order into the office by November 30th.

French Quiz on Friday, November 5th:  Students will have a ‘matching’ french quiz on greetings and leave-takings.  They will bring their duotangs home this weekend to study.

Genius Hour:  Next Tuesday we will have our Genius Hour kickoff.  Genius hour will take place on Friday afternoons, from 2:00 – 2:50.

Bible Memory:  There is no BMV next week but the students will bring home a sheet for the 2nd – 4th weeks in November.  Just a reminder that there is a Bible Memory tab at the top of the blog – in case your child loses their sheet and needs to study. =)

Upcoming Dates:

November

Nov 5 – Knight’s Day

Nov. 11 – Remembrance Day – School Closed

Nov. 12 – PD Day – School Closed

Nov. 17 – Jersey Day

Nov 19 – Knight’s Day

Nov. 26 – Parent/Teacher Interviews

Weekly Update

We had a great week here in the Grade 5 classroom.

Here is a snapshot of what we have been working on over the last several weeks:

Math:  We have finished up our unit on place value.  This unit included place value up to the millions, adding and subtracting large digits, rounding and estimating.  This week students will have a unit quiz, do a self reflection on this unit and then we will begin working on multiplication.

Writing:  We have been working on narrative writing over the last month.  Students have written an ‘All about Me’ piece, a piece about bravery and will begin a new piece on friendship this week.  We will then choose our favourite piece to bring to a good copy -including having it written on the chromebook and made into a class book.  We are also working on grammar through our mentor sentence program.

Science:  Students have been learning about heterogenous mixtures and homogeneous solutions.  They have done a variety of experiments to learn about terms like solute, solvent, diluted and concentrated solutions.  Over the next couple of weeks they will look at ph and a variety of different ways to separate solutions.

Reading: continuation of reading skills with a focus on visualization as we begin our first novel study of the year.

Social Studies: levels of government and the areas of our lives affected by government.

Art: Colour theory

French:  We are learning about various greetings and leave-takings.

Bible:  We are finishing up our Growth Mindset unit and beginning to look at ‘The Case for Christ for Kids’ book together.

Here are some upcoming events:

Pumpkin Math on Monday: On Monday we will be exploring Math with pumpkins!  Students should bring a large t-shirt to wear over their uniform as well as some kitchen gloves if they don’t like to get their hands goopy!

Genius Hour:  We will be having our genius hour kickoff on Tuesday, November 2nd.

Upcoming Dates:

Oct. 26 – Individual Photo Retakes

Nov 5 – Knight’s Day

Nov. 11 – Remembrance Day – School Closed

Nov. 12 – PD Day – School Closed

Photos from this week:. This week we have been learning about mixtures and solutions.  On Tuesday we made a ‘trail mix’ mixture.  Students watched a video about mixtures, we did a demonstration,  and students showed how the trail mixture could be separated.  Then of course, they enjoyed eating the mixture!  Edible Science is always a hit!  Enjoy the photos!
