Parent-Teacher Interviews on Wednesday, November 16th

On November 16th we have set aside a day to meet with each of our families to discuss your child’s progress.  Below is a link for you to sign up for a 15-minute slot.  It is important that we meet with each family for an interview.  If you are unable to meet on the 16th please email me at pgoosen@highroadacademy.com to arrange another time.

IMMIGRATION ASSIGNMENT: This week students were introduced to our newest unit – immigration. Each child has brought home a family immigration page to fill in with you or another family member.

This assignment is meant to give each student an understanding of their own family and for us as a class to see the journey that each of us has taken historically to eventually all end up in Chilliwack together. For many of the students this will be an exciting project and may give some of them a great excuse to call up a grandparent! For others this could be a tricky assignment depending on your family history as an immigrant, Indigenous person, refugee, adoption, etc. If you have any concerns or if there are elements of your family story that you prefer not to share with your child, please feel free to send me an email, pgoosen@highroadacademy.com

Students are more than welcome to share more than one family member’s story but are only required to write up one.

If you need an extra copy, please use the pictures of the assignment below.

Weekly Update

It was a very smoky week this last week, which meant that students were stuck indoors all week.  All things considered, they did VERY WELL – I know they missed getting outside at recess and expending some energy!  It is not often that I am thankful for the rain – but this weekend I certainly am!

Here are a couple of things coming up:

Pumpkin Math on Tuesday:  We are excited to have pumpkin Math this Tuesday afternoon.  Please send along a large t-shirt students can wear over their uniform as well as rubber gloves if your child won’t want to touch the ‘pumpkin goop’.  I would love it if a parent or two would be able to help out on Tuesday afternoon!  Please send me an email at pgoosen@highroadacademy.com if you are able to help.

Fall Colour Day:  On Wednesday, October 26th students can wear fall colours instead of their uniform.

Socktober:  Please send socks to help those less fortunate!  If your child sends three pairs of socks they can wear ‘fun socks’ for the rest of the month.

Upcoming Dates:

Tuesday, October 25th – School Photo Retakes

Tuesday, October 25th – Pumpkin Math afternoon (after retakes)

Wednesday, October 26th – Fall Colour Day

Thursday, November 10th – Remembrance Day service at 10:30

Friday, November 11th – Remembrance Day (school closed)

Have a wonderful weekend!

Socktober

We are excited to participate in SOCKTOBER!  Students can bring new or gently used socks to the classroom!  Three pairs of socks = students can wear non-uniform socks for the month of October!  Read the poster below for more information.

Weekly Update

We had a great week in the Grade 5 classroom!  Yesterday was a bit crazy for me personally as my lunchtime included a quick emergency room drop-off for my oldest son as he fractured his thumb during a game of basketball!  We are praying Quinn heals quickly as he’s hoping to play basketball this winter!

Other than that bit of craziness, we had a fantastic week!  Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been working on:

Math:  problem-solving using addition and subtraction, as well as rounding numbers up to the ten thousand

Writing:  Wrote a personal narrative piece on a time we were brave.  Our focus for writing this week was adding a fact and then including details about the fact.

Science:  We are in the middle of learning about the rock cycle.  This week our focus was sedimentary rocks – students ‘made’ rocks using playdough and sediments from our school.  Next up – metamorphic rocks!

French:  We learned how to say “My name is… & What is Your Name?” and reviewed the terms ‘oui’ and ‘non’.  We will continue this next week.

Bible:  We are working on the memorizing the books of the old testament and starting to learn important Bible basics.

Art:  We have started a fall pumpkin art project.  This week we ‘drew’ our pumpkin scene with liquid glue and once it dried we outlined it with thin sharpie.  Next up…watercolour!  They will be beautiful!!

PE:  Volleyball has started!

A Few Items…

Bible Memory Verses:  Students did a GREAT job on their Bible Memory Verses this week.  I was very impressed!  =). Just a note that they will be in the Bible Memory Verse tab at the top of this blog – just in case your child can’t find the sheet I sent home.  This week I will be testing on Thursday as we have another short week.

Pumpkin Math:  On Tuesday, October 25th we will be having a Pumpkin Math afternoon.  We will be using estimating, measuring, counting and graphing skills while we have fun with pumpkins!  We will be proving all of the materials but ask that you send along a large t-shirt and gloves on Tuesday morning.

Upcoming Dates:

Friday, October 21st – Pro D Day

Tuesday, October 25th – School Photo Retakes

Tuesday, October 25th – Pumpkin Math afternoon (after retakes)

Wednesday, October 26th – Fall Colour Day

Thursday, November 10th – Remembrance Day service at 10:30

Friday, November 11th – Remembrance Day (school closed)

Have a great weekend!

Weekly Update

It was so great to be back in the classroom after missing a few days!  We had a great week – another short one – but we managed to get a lot done!  Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been working on:

  • In Math we’ve been working on large digit addition and subtraction
  • In Writing we finished up our first piece, titled “I Like Me”
  • In Reading we finished up a mini-unit on reading fluency and students practiced and performed reader’s theater plays.
  • In Science we began a unit on The Rock Cycle and we started learning about Igneous Rocks…this may have included some delicious red ‘igneous rock’ Jell-o!
  • In Bible we started an “All About the Bible” unit – giving students an overall picture of the Bible.  We also are starting to learn the books of the Bible!  So far we have the first four books!
  • We finally got paid for our jobs and had our first trip to the school store.

Bible Memory Verses:  Students will be coming home with a sheet on Tuesday that outlines the next four weeks of Bible Memory Verses.  We will be starting with the Lord’s Prayer.  We will try and recite them at school, but memorization of these verses will primarily be done at home.  In addition, students will be drawing and writing a reflection on these verses.  I have included the assignment the students will do for me each week as well as the scoring rubric.  If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask.

Comfort Kits:  Please have these handed in by Friday, October 14th.

Upcoming Dates:

Friday, October 7th – Pro D Day

Monday, October 10 – Thanksgiving

Friday, October 14 – Knight’s Day

Friday, October 21st – Pro D Day

Tuesday, October 25th – School Photo Retakes

Wednesday, October 26th – Fall Colour Day

Weekly Update

Happy Saturday to you.  It feels a bit odd writing a weekly update when I missed half of the week due to being sick!  Today I am feeling much better, though, and I’m pretty positive I’ll be at school on Monday.  I am thankful to Mr. Cliff and Mrs. Willms for coming into our classroom while I was away – they both reported that the class was FANTASTIC…I was not surprised in the least!  =)

This week we focused a lot on learning about residential schools and the history of Orange Shirt day through age-appropriate picture books and activities.  On Thursday students wrote healing words onto orange hearts that will be going around the fence facing Chilliwack Central Road.

French Quiz on Thursday:. We have been working on our French alphabet this week.  I was originally going to quiz the students this Tuesday, but I wanted some daily practice during the week.  With my absence that didn’t happen, so we will now have the quiz on Thursday,  October 6th.  I will say 10 letters of the alphabet in French and they will write the letter for me.  I am attaching the video to help your child practice.  They should have brought their duotang home last week.

Class Store on Monday:  Last Thursday was supposed to be our first class store – another thing that will be happening this week!  This is always such a fun day as students will get paid for doing their class job, pay rent on their desk, and then have an opportunity to spend some of their money at the store!  This is also a GREAT lesson on the importance of saving for things you really want, as not all items are affordable yet!

Upcoming Dates:

Friday, October 7th – Pro D Day

Monday, October 10 – Thanksgiving

Friday, October 14 – Knight’s Day

Friday, October 21st – Pro D Day

Tuesday, October 25th – School Photo Retakes

Wednesday, October 26th – Fall Colour Day
