Weekly Update

The countdown is on!  Two weeks left of school until spring break!  Ms. Miller and I have been really proud of how hard the students have been working these last few weeks.  We are not slowing down as we are trying to keep the momentum going right up until the break.  So far the students are tracking along with us!  We also have only two class points needed for a party.  I think there is a good chance that they will be able to earn their party before the break!

Here is a snapshot of what we have been doing this week:

Social Studies: We got to hear about every family’s immigration story this week. WOW! What an incredible experience. Our world map got filled up with yarn, modes of transportation and labels for our countries of origin. Thank you for for sharing your stories with your children, it is obvious that this was a huge area of interest to this group.

Art: Our Dana Irving trees are really sprucing up our walls. Enjoy the pictures.

Math:  Students have done very well learning about algebraic equations.  They started with learning how to solve for the unknown with a t-chart and then looking for patterns in pictures.  We will continue working on this next week.

Writing:  Students completed their SuperHero persuasive writing piece and we will begin a unit on comparison writing next week.

Bible:  We are continuing with our unit on Promises of God.  This week we looked at prayer and we will look at what the Bible promises us when we are afraid.

Science:  We did a variety of experiments where we learned the difference between solutes and solvents, concentrated and diluted solutions.

A few things to note:

Storybook Character Day on March 10th:  We have a fun dress up day during the last week of school!  As this may need some additional planning, we wanted to get this out to you right away.

French Quiz came home today.  Please take a look over it and let me know if you have any questions.

Upcoming Dates:

Feb. 24 – Pink Shirt Day

Feb. 26 – Knights Day

Mar. 5 – Knights Day

Mar. 10 – Storybook Character Day

Mar. 12 – Knights Day/Last Day Before Spring Break

Mar. 29 – Classes resume

Rube Goldberg Machines

We had SO MUCH FUN designing and building our Rube Goldberg machines!  I was so proud of the students ability to design, collaborate, problem solve and build these amazing machines!  As parents weren’t able to join us this year, I took a video of everyone’s machine.

My apologies you didn’t get this sooner!  I was experiencing technical difficulties…as in I couldn’t for the life of me remember how to post these as videos instead of links!  =)

Enjoy!

Weekly Update

Good afternoon!  I hope you are having a wonderful start to the Family Day weekend!  We had a productive week here in the Grade Five classroom!  Rube Goldbergs were completed this week (I will send a blog post with the videos shortly) and the students did AN AMAZING JOB!  I was so impressed with the creativity in the projects, the students abilities to problem solve and work as a team.  Well done!  Students also had fun with their buddies, working together on a Valentine’s craft.

Here is a snapshot of what we did in class this week:

Math:  We are coming to the end of our division unit.  Students completed their division booklets, did an online ‘build a monster’ division problem solving activity and are working on a Movie Marathon division activity.  They will have a unit quiz this coming week and we will then move into algebraic equations (solving for the unknown).

Writing:  We have started our final persuasive writing project on the student’s favourite superhero.  This has a research component where the students use a couple of websites to read about and choose their favourite superhero.  This is a ‘show me what you know’ writing piece, where students will need to include all the elements of persuasive writing that we have learned about this year.

Science:  Rube Goldberg projects finished on Monday and we began our next unit on Mixtures and Solutions.  On Friday students experimented mixing a variety of solids and liquids together, observing their results.  We then read about mixtures, solutions and compound, and will delve deeper into that next week.

French:  We continued exploring the numbers 1-20.

Social Studies: This week we discussed push and pull factors of immigration. Each child has brought home a family immigration page to fill in with you. This is due Wednesday. If you need an extra copy please use the pictures of the assignment below.

Reading: Students practiced their oral stories and will present next Wednesday.

Upcoming Dates:

Feb. 15 – Family Day (no school)

Feb. 19 – Knights Day

Feb. 24 – Pink Shirt Day

Feb. 26 – Knights Day

Here’s some photos of our Science lesson and Valentine’s craft.  I will send a separate blog post with our Rube Goldberg videos shortly.

The Cold Weather’s Here!

The weather has turned very chilly this week and we are asking students to come dressed to be outside.  Please ensure students come with winter jackets, gloves and toques this week, as we will be outside during morning and lunch recess.

Thank you!

Math:
Continuing our learning on long division

Writing:  Finishing up our persuasive piece on ‘Should We Have Pets?’

Bible:  Learning about prayer.

Science:  Today was our final day to work on our projects.  Mrs. Johnsrude will be coming Monday afternoon to judge our students’ Rube Goldberg Machines.

Reading: This week we continued our unit on oral language. We talked about different ways that we can make our communication more effective and everyone came up for a metaphor for oral language. Students will be practicing the story they want to share with the class next Thursday. We will be going outside for this, so it is important that everyone bring warm clothing for February 11.

Social Studies: Our unit on government is over. We discussed how laws are formed and why the process takes so long. On Thursday we started a brand-new unit on immigration. Over the coming weeks your child will be asking questions about their family history. If your family has a sensitive immigration story or if your child doesn’t have access to information regarding their family’s country of origin or journey to Canada can you please send an email to Ms. Miller asap so that we can discuss this and make appropriate arrangements. amiller@highroadacademy.com
