The BEST cell rap ever!

We have started our new Science unit on The Diversity of Life and have begun learning about cells.  I showed the students a YouTube video that has a cell rap – and it was requested that I put it onto the blog…enjoy!

A few reminders…

Happy Friday!  We had a great first week back and are well into the swing of things!  I have a few reminders for you below:

Knight Day on Monday.  Students are welcome to wear their knight shirts and clothing on Monday, January 13th.

Math Mayhem – Monday, January 13th from 6:30 – 8.  This is a family event where parents and their children come to the school and play Math games.  We had a great time last year and would encourage families to come with their children for a fun evening! Geared towards grades 2-9 students. Cookies and coffee provided.

Black Boots – We  wanted to remind students and parents that black boots are NOT one of options given for uniform footwear.  Students can wear black boots outside during the cold weather but must wear uniform shoes inside the school/classroom.  If they forget and come with their boots we will have them wear their P.E. shoes instead.

Thanks and have a great weekend!

Countdown to Sochi!

Only 30 days remain until the Winter Olympics!  Even though I am not exactly gifted in any of the events, the ‘Canadian’ in me goes a little Olympic crazy every 4 years at this time.  For the month of January and leading up to the Olympics, the grade 6 class will be learning A LOT about the different Winter Olympic sports, Canadian athletes, and about this year’s destination city – Sochi, Russia.

To start, each student has chosen a different Winter Olympic sport (excluding hockey) to research and present to the class on Tuesday, February 4th.  Most of the work will be done in school, however, I would really appreciate it if in the next week, you could sit down with your child and assist them with some note-taking about their sport.  Below is a copy of the assignment.  They will create either a poster or brochure or newspaper to highlight their sport and some of the top contenders expecting to medal.  Later on today I will attach some helpful websites to the blog to help with the research process.  Youtube is also a valuable tool and I recommend the ‘How They Train’ series that TIME published for the Vancouver Olympics.  (Sorry about the U.S. focus)  Canada is also publishing a series called ‘#wearewinter’  that features Canadian athletes.  (Please note that your presence very nearby is highly recommended while allowing the viewing of youtube.)

Thanks for your support!  Any discussions that you have at home about the upcoming Winter Olympics will further enhance your child’s educational experience.  THE COUNTDOWN IS ON!!!!

Welcome Back!

We hope you and your family had a relaxing Christmas holiday!  I know that both Mrs. Derksen and I had a fantastic Christmas break, spending lots of time with our families and enjoying a couple of weeks off!  And now we are busy preparing to get back into the swing of things!  We have a number of different items below as January seems to be a busy month.

Winter Scene Photos Needed

This Wednesday we are beginning a new art project using paint and charcoal and the students need to bring a photo of a winter scene – with lots of snow!  They can bring a photo from a book or print off a picture from the computer.  I will print off a couple of pictures but won’t have enough for each student.  I have posted a few examples for you to look at – you can even use one of those if you’d like!

Bible Memory Verse

The students will be learning Psalm 19: 1-8 for their next Bible Memory Verse and this Thursday they will be tested on verses 1 & 2.  It is up on the blog, under the Bible Memory Verse section.

Water Bottles for Phys Ed

bootcamp

Mrs. Derksen and I are starting a new BOOTCAMP unit in Phys Ed and students (as well as us) will be working up quite a sweat!  Please have them put water bottles in their gym bags as there will not be opportunities for the class to run out to the water fountains.

Ski Trip Information

Just a reminder that the online registration for the Intermediates’ ski trip closes on Tuesday evening, January 7th. If you have not yet registered online, please do so immediately! You will not be able to register at the payment lines. The online registration is on Mrs. Couse’s blog in the top right-hand corner.

The payment phase of ski registration is this Wednesday and Thursday, January 8th & 9th. It will be in the school lobby from 3:10-3:50 pm. Please bring the waiver form signed on both sides. Just one form is required per family, but all parents and children attending must legibly sign it. (I need to be able to read it. Thank you!) Payment will be made at the registration tables (not at the office). Payment may be made by cash or cheque; or by debit or student reserve accounts.

Parents who are going along need to have filled in a criminal records check and those who are driving another family must also bring your drivers license and $2 million liability insurance to the school office so they can make a copy of it.  Please do so by Tuesday.

If you have questions, please ask Mrs. Couse after school on Monday or Tuesday, or send her an email.

Thank you,

Mrs. Barb Couse

Ski Trip Coordinator

And the Busy Season is Officially Here…

Hi Everyone,

We’re trying to get a jump on the week here since the craziness that is called ‘December’ is about to hit.  🙂  Though it may be very busy, it will be lots of fun so please check the blog often for updates and all the great things happening both in our class and at Highroad.

FOOD DRIVE:

The Salvation Army Food Drive begins on MONDAY, DECEMBER 2nd!!  The students don’t even know yet and this year the intermediate classes are competing against one another – if you haven’t figured it out yet, Mrs. Goosen and Mrs. Derksen can get highly competitive about inter-class competitions, especially when it’s for such a good cause.  So let’s bring in the most non-perishable food items that we can.  There are buttons available at the school office that students can get for $1 (which is reimbursed when they return the button) if they want to go door-to-door in their neighborhoods.  Please note:  wearing a school uniform and never going alone is highly encouraged!

Food Drive will run from Monday, December 2nd to Wednesday, December 18th.

BRACELET/BAKE SALE FUNDRAISER RESULTS:

The grade 5/6 and 6 classes raised a whopping $526.49 for the Red Cross to help with restoration efforts in the Philippines.  That money will be DOUBLED by the Canadian government to send overseas.  Thank you to all of our students that made bracelets – sales ran out and I hear they took orders! 🙂 I guess the in-class bracelet making isn’t quite over yet. 😉
